1978 Bedford HA 600 cwt
Overview
Here we have an absolutely brilliant example of Britain's ultimate light commercial workhorse—the Bedford HA Van. For many of us, the HA was the very first taste of commercial driving, and it remains one of the absolute best light commercials of the 1970s and 80s. This particular 1978 'S' registration model is the desirable 600 cwt version (the heavier payload variant) and incredibly shows just one owner from new on the logbook.
It has been beautifully restored in the past and has just finished an extensive stint in our workshops to make sure it is 100% ready for its next chapter. Wrapped in a striking, eye-catching red that absolutely pops in the sunlight, this little van is guaranteed to turn heads wherever it goes.
Exterior & Interior Condition
We would comfortably rate the overall bodywork and paint at a very honest 8 out of 10. Being a classic commercial, it has lived a genuine life, so there are a few very minor touched-up chips upon close inspection and one notable small work-related dent in the rear door. However, the roof gutters, door bottoms, and sills are all entirely solid and in excellent shape. The bumpers and wheels have been treated to a high-quality silvery-chrome finish that complements the paint beautifully, and the tires are essentially brand new all around.
Inside, the cabin is remarkably tidy. It features clean, comfortable black vinyl seats, a painted rear load area complete with a protective carpet insert, and all the dashboard clocks function exactly as they should. The red instrument binnacle shows a slightly different shade of red to the rest of the interior trim, leaving room for a touch of concourse detailing if you wish, but it presents perfectly as a highly usable classic.
Mechanicals & Underneath
Under the bonnet sits a highly reliable 1256cc petrol engine nestled in an exceptionally clean, well-detailed engine bay. Our workshops have completely gone through the mechanicals to ensure peace of mind for the next owner, fitting a brand new fuel pump, new alternator, new battery, and carrying out a full service. It runs sweet, pulls exactly as it should, and handles remarkably well. Structurally, the underside is solid; it has undergone standard historical patch-welding repairs over its life, all executed to a robust, MOT-compliant standard.
